The 2023 growing season was spectacular! It was the year that you can say was the end of the drought! We enjoyed a long ripening curve, and the season only saw one heat spike over the Labor Day weekend. The flavors in the fruit developed marvelously at lower brix, adding a texture found only in years blessed by controlled temperatures and slow sugar accumulation. Full-bodied flavors developed with mild offshore winds that slightly kissed the berries with mild dehydration. This ever so subtle concentration set the incredible minerality that is the backbone of Kamen Estate Vineyard.
Wow! Perhaps the best Syrah from the estate. It greets your glass with a saturated inky purple-black. The aromatic explosion that follows is just as deep and exceptional. The perfume is both exotic and richly layered. Mountain berries, boysenberries and black currants explode from the glass, with elegant and savory notes of tea box, forest floor, pencil lead, tobacco leaf, violets and sunbaked rocks. The more the wine opens, the more intoxicating the aromas become. The palate is seamlessly intense, complex, concentrated and balanced. The tannins are velvety and well-integrated leading to a never-ending finish. A beguiling tour de force.
“The 2023 Syrah is a total knockout. Bold and savory, the Kamen Syrah is one of the most distinctive wines in all of California. Mark Herold adds 100% stems (dried for three days after harvest) and Viognier skins to the must, resulting in a wine of superb purity, complexity and varietal character. Firm mountain tannins pull it all together on a finish laced with blue/black fruit, black pepper, sage, mint and lavender.” 96 points. Drinking window: 2026-2035.
